Galway lift silverware in Croker

First League title since 2014

A GALWAY ladies football captain walked up the steps of the Hogan Stand last Saturday for just the third time to collect a national trophy.

Tuam-Cortoon’s Kate Geraghty joined Killererin’s Marie O’Connell (2002 All-Ireland Junior Championship) and Kilkerrin-Clonberne’s Annette Clarke (2004 All-Ireland Senior Championship) in lifting silverware at GAA headquarters after Galway’s six-point victory over Cork in the Lidl Ladies National Football League Division 2 final.

The Tribeswomen secured a first League title in 11 years thanks to second half goals from Lynsey Noone and Róisín Leonard.

Yes, it may have been just Division 2 of the League, but this was still a significant result for Galway.

After two recent thumpings from Kerry, plus the scars remaining from their controversial loss to Cork in the 2020 All-Ireland semi-final, Galway needed a big result on Jones’ Road, if only to strengthen the belief that they are destined for bigger and brighter days.

Their opening 30-minute audition belonged on the cutting room floor, however. Just like Rory McIlroy at the Masters in Augusta, crossing that winning line is the hardest part, and similar to the now green jacket holder, Galway were making it as difficult as possible.
