Ruane: When Sligo came back, leaders stood up
TUAM-OUGHTERARD made it back-to-back Connacht Senior Cup triumphs on Sunday last in Creggs. However, unlike last year's final when they comprehensively defeated University of Galway on an 82-12 scoreline, the Galway outfit were made to dig deep before they eventually overcame Sligo by 39-24.
At one stage, Tuam-Oughterard led by 25 points but three tries in a seven-minute spell saw Sligo reduce the lead to just eight. Yet a late converted try by Saoirse Quinn ensured victory for the reigning league champions.
Joint Tuam-Oughterard head coach Owen Lydon said he always expected a tough final and was delighted with his side who had to show a different aspect of their game as Sligo took the contest to them midway through the second half.
“We always knew it wasn't going to be a case of us just simply showing up,” Lydon said afterwards.
