Tuam Stars bridge 17-year gap to win North Minor A crown
TUAM STARS have been making major strides at underage level in recent seasons and on Sunday afternoon the club captured their first North Board Minor (U-17) A Football Championship title since 2006 after being pushed every step of the way by holders Claregalway.
Any day that you score 16 points in a 60-minute final, you're going to be very hard to beat. And so it was as a brace of first half goals from Cormac Feeney and Dara Kavanagh kept Claregalway in contention but the Stars were able to carve out the scores when they needed them to emerge fully deserving victors.
Tuam and Claregalway lined up alongside Corofin, Annaghdown and Dunmore MacHales in a five-team North Board A competition that started off on a round-robin basis in late June. The Balchies got one over on the Stars in the group phase, but the tables were turned in impressive fashion when the sides met for a second time.
Manager Donal Marley included selectors Mike Ryan, Cathal Hynes, Tommy Carton, Paul O'Rourke and Christopher Devaney in an experienced backroom team and their team's scoring load was shared between seven different contributors - a telling statistic when compared to Claregalway's four...
