Tuam teens’ twist on Celtic battle for West Awake showcase

TUAM teens have put their own twist on the Celtic mythological tale of Lugh versus Balor, which will be showcased in an outdoor performance and spectacle during this weekend’s West Awake Festival.

Balor, known in folklore for his giant evil eye, has been reimagined from a Tuam perspective and has become a gigantic and ruthless Mayor of Tuam – out to dictate what young people can and can’t do in the town.

The story was written by a 15-member group that is part of the creative arts group Sparkcatchers - all under the creative eye of Midie Corcoran and JoJo Hynes.

Young people aged between 12 and 17 have spent recent weeks working on much of the colourful and monster-sized costumes and puppets that will be part of the outdoor show this Sunday (August 20), entitled Lugh’s Quest for Something! Any Something…
