‘New era’ at St Jarlath’s sees old art auctioned off
A SERIES of religious paintings and ecclesiastical items from St Jarlath’s College Tuam will go under the hammer next week in a bid to raise funds for the school that will become a co-educational facility later this month.
The 11 paintings, including a portrait of Archbishop John MacHale, are aimed at buyers with a connection to the school down through the years.
The paintings are listed at prices starting at €50 through to €2,000 for the MacHale portrait, while a collection of ecclesiastical brass candle holders and a Thurible – the vessel used for burning incense during religious ceremonies – are also included in the sale, conducted by Purcell Auctioneers in Birr, Co Offaly…
