Communities unite in opposition to North Galway windfarm

A CAMPAIGN to oppose the development of a windfarm stretching across four villages in north Galway is gaining momentum with over 200 people attending a public meeting in Corofin last week.

The Laurclavagh Windfarm Action Group formed earlier this year in response to plans to develop an industrial windfarm comprising of nine 185m tall turbines on a site that takes in parts of Belclare, Caherlistrane, Corrandulla and Corofin.

A total of 480 houses will be impacted by the proposed development, where the turbines will be taller than nearby Knockma Hill, which at its highest point stands 170m.

Committee member Mary T Bermingham said the site would encompass a loop across the four regions, from the Ranch House on the N83 towards the Caherlea Road, taking in New Line and around by Castlehackett National School.

“We are just another site to the company involved, Enerco Energy, who are trying to bring an industrial development into the middle of a heavily populated rural area,” she said.

This is the second such meeting in a fortnight, after residents in Clonberne gathered a fortnight ago to express their grave reservations in relation to a proposed windfarm in their locality...
