Creggs win J1A League title in style

Jubilant scenes after 27-year waits comes to an end

CREGGS' 27-year wait for league glory came to an end on Sunday last when they defeated Connemara in the J1A League final at the Sportsgrounds in a highly entertaining encounter, writes Martin Nally.

However, it was Connemara who struck first after only 90 seconds when Eoin Bourke touched down in the corner. Creggs eventually settled and actually led 14-5 at the break courtesy of tries from Shane Purcell and Daniel Arnold. They stretched their advantage shortly after the restart with a Brian Donohue converted try.

Connemara did threaten a comeback when Bourke scored his second try of the match but with ten minutes remaining, Mark Dowd broke to score a crucial try for his side. An Ian Staunton five-pointer on the stroke of full-time was mere consolation as the day belonged to Creggs. When referee, Shane Gaughan, blew the full time whistle it sparked scenes of jubilation as Creggs revelled in their success…
