Tuam convent to home refugees

Refurbished building will hold up to 50 people, mainly Ukrainian families

PLANS to accommodate Ukrainian families in a former convent in Tuam town centre are progressing with confirmation that up to 50 people will be housed in the Mercy Convent building in the coming weeks.

Refurbishment works are continuing at the property where the second and third floors are being prepared for accommodation, which is being arranged by Tuam Parish, independent of IPAS, the government agency coordinating the housing of refugees.

Administrator of Tuam Fr Pat Farragher said the final number of people likely to be housed in the convent was still to be confirmed depending on the need to accommodate families.

“The current work is to do with preparing the second and third floors of the building for accommodation purposes,” he said…
