Students’ reared calves bid to claim All-Ireland agri prize

Final adjudication takes place in Croke Park in March

A GROUP of four Mountbellew students are on the home stretch of a national agricultural competition, having reared five Irish Angus calves over the past 18 months as part of the Certified Irish Angus Beef contest.

Amy Higgins from Dangan, Peter O’Neill from Ballymacward, Oisín Colleran from Moylough and Cormac Delaney from Caltra are Leaving Cert students in Holy Rosary College. They received the livestock as part of their prize as one of six finalists in the competition back in 2021.

The calves were reared on Amy’s family farm in Dangan, from September last year, and having sent the animals for slaughter, the four students have submitted a final project on their work. They will be interviewed by the judging panel next month in their bid to claim the overall prize.

Speaking to The Tuam Herald, Amy said that all the calves did extremely well and the team was looking forward to the national finals that will be held in Croke Park in March…
