Pole-free paths regenerate entrance to Tuam

Perseverance and patience over past four years

IT has taken over four years to do it, but the Bishop Street entrance to Tuam town centre is now pole- and wire-free.

The initiative to underground all the electrical and telecommunications cables was driven by Tuam Tidy Towns Committee and the Tuam Christmas Lights committee, both of which have commended the support of County Council staff in bringing the project to fruition.

Now they hope that the decluttered streetscape and uninterrupted paths will pave the way for similar projects elsewhere in the town.

Work on placing all the cables underground and removing the poles began early last year but the project was delayed by the pandemic. However, in recent weeks, the final phase resumed and last week the last pole was taken down.
