A fresh start after 20 years of disuse
TWENTY years after the former Western Health Board bought the private Bon Secours Hospital in Tuam, work on transforming the derelict building into a Mental Health campus has begun.
On Monday morning workers from contractors Carey Construction moved on to the site at Vicar Street which over the next 15 to 18 months will be transformed into a Mental Health campus and centre for disability and early intervention services at a cost of €13 million.
While the extensive project will involve considerable demolition work, much of the existing hospital structure on Vicar Street will remain in situ and be significantly refurbished and renovated.
