Ballygar students turn to science to trace area's long-lost cousins

FINDING lost-lost cousins is not just a hobby for retired people with time on their hands. It can be an important part of our tourism industry, particularly for places that are not on the regular tourist trail.
Ballygar could be in for an influx of visitors over the next few years thanks to a unique project being undertaken by the Transition Year students of Colaiste Mhuire in the town.
The TY students are being given an opportunity to explore their family roots in a way that no other school has done so far in Ireland or indeed the world.
The students are DNA testing a member of their family and that DNA test will then be compared with the several million people worldwide who have also done an ancestry test and are on the Ancestry.com database.
