Residents 'led up the garden path and left in the dark'

Residents in two Tuam estates, left in the dark with their street lights turned off, are vexed at broken promises made by a local councillor and a Senator who told them during electioneering that this would not happen.
Prior to the election Cllr Shaun Cunniffe and defeated Labour Dail candidate Lorraine Higgins told the residents that they need no longer fear that the street lights would be switched off.
Irate residents in the Cois na hAbhainn estate, and in the middle section of Lissadyra, were left without street lights from last weekend and several said that they had been given promises by the two politicians that the matter had been resolved.
The problem surfaced because of a dispute between the bank that holds the bond from the developers of the estates and the Co Council, resulting in Electric Ireland having to swtich off the street lights as the bank were withholding the bond.
The residents, who are still in the dark, are discommoded by all this and are now the victims of “false promises” , according to Cllr Donagh Killilea, Cathaoirleach of Tuam Municipal Council.
