Gathering to mark 50 years of Ability West branch in Tuam

THE Tuam branch of Ability West will celebrate 50 years of dedicated service in a voluntary capacity to Tuam and surrounding areas with a special function on May 17.
The inaugural meeting of the Tuam Association for Mentally Handicapped Children (as it was known then) was held in the Parochial Centre, later known as the Community Centre, on May 17, 1966.
The meeting was attended by a large gathering of people who were interested in setting up the association in the town. Now some 50 years later a number of the founding members will join in next week’s celebrations to mark the huge contribution the branch has made, not only to Tuam but to overall services provided by what has now become Ability West.
