Funding cuts put Tuam rape counselling service out of reach
TUAM is likely to be left without an outreach service from the Galway Rape Crisis Centre in the medium term because of tough funding cuts.
Women in the North Galway area were able to meet with representatives of the centre at a location in the town, but now have to travel to the city to receive support and counselling for sexual abuse or sexual violence.
CEO of Galway Rape Crisis Centre Helen Mortimer told The Herald that they simply don’t have the resources to operate the Tuam service. Two similar services continue to be available in Gort and Ballinasloe because they are run by volunteers and the premises are cost-free.
