Connacht three-in-a-row for Galway Ladies Football team
A THIRD successive Connacht Ladies Football Senior Championship title for Galway, all at the expense of Mayo, the latest victory at MacHale Park, Castlebar last Sunday.
Again captained by Sinéad Burke of Killanin, Galway were always doing enough to win with relative ease, although Mayo had it back to one point when long-serving Cora Staunton set up Anna Tuohy for a palmed goal late in the first half, but quick points by Barbara and Lucy Hannon and Aoibheann Daly helped Galway to an interval lead of 1-8 to 1-5.
They “won” the second half by eight points to seven, and are through to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
Cora Staunton, winner of nine All-Star awards in her illustrious career, did all she could to keep Mayo in contention but in the past three years Galway have been consistently excellent in defence as a unit and particularly good in the central positions, with full-back Mairéad Coyne and centre half-back Emer Flaherty always top of their game, and the vastly experienced Johanna Connolly an outstanding goalkeeper.
