Galway looking out the 'back door’ again
IN the Connacht Senior Football Championship, Galway vs Mayo is no longer “one kick of a ball between them.”
As recently as 2008 and 2009, it was living up to tradition. So close was this rivalry, Galway won the 2008 Connacht final against Mayo by one point and a year later Mayo turned the tables on Galway when they left Pearse Stadium with a one-point victory. Ironically, the final scoreline was the same in those two back-to-back clashes between these neighbouring counties: 2-12 to 1-14.
Since then, they’ve met three times and Mayo won all three driving the Green and Red bus in third gear: in 2011 by 1-12 to 1-6 at Castlebar; last year at Pearse Stadium, 4-16 to 0-11, and last Sunday at Castlebar.
So, in their last three Connacht Championship clashes with Mayo, their greatest rivals Galway lost to them by six, 17 and seven points.
