Classy corofin claim sixth connacht title in style
PROVINCIAL championships are rarely won without grinding out results along the road, but Corofin have done it an entirely different way, sweeping aside all comers to claim their sixth Connacht club title.
Ballintubber were their latest casualties and despite coming in with impressive form, the Mayo champions suffered a similar fate to all of Corofin’s previous opponents as a superb all-round display team settled matters long before the final whistle at MacHale Park, Castlebar. Although the full picture of their year won’t be complete until a tricky trip to London has been negotiated, Corofin look the real deal and everything now points towards a serious tilt at an All-Ireland.
Five years had passed since they last got their hands on the Shane McGettigan Cup and several hard knocks had come from All-Ireland semi-final defeats to Kilmacud Crokes and St. Gall’s, on to that unforgettable afternoon in Kiltoom and last year’s defeat to Castlebar Mitchels.
All of that fed into a supremely focused and driven Corofin performance at MacHale Park on Sunday and they went about their business as they’ve done all year, in a convincing and ruthless manner.
