Galway grow in stature with impressive win on the road

OAKLEAFERS, Derry GAA’s official matchday programme, carried an insightful piece on Sunday titled 'The Curse of the Tribe’, a reflection on the county’s ’litany of woe’ against Galway teams over the past couple of decades.
The All-Ireland SFC semi-finals of 1998 and 2001, in particular, were painfully recalled. So too the All-Ireland minor semi-final of 2007 along with defeats for Dungiven, Loup and Slaughtneil at the hands of Galway club teams.
It amounted to quite a list of important matches from a Derry perspective and while League football in February may be well down the pecking order in terms of importance, Sunday’s victory maintained the Indian sign that Galway hold in fixtures between the two counties and also backed up their qualifier result from last July.
Three points separated the teams at the finish, but Galway’s win was more emphatic than that. Far more emphatic.
