Galway's promotion hopes dashed by Cavan in Breffni
FOR a sixth successive season, Galway will play their League football in Division 2 and on the basis of Sunday’s four-point defeat to Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park, there can be few if any complaints about that outcome.
As the home players trooped off to a standing ovation and soaked up the acclaim of their supporters, Galway were left to reflect on a promotion challenge that fizzled out after such a promising start to 2016.
Galway’s campaign can be looked at in several different lights. Taking the glass half full view, their only defeats came against the two best teams in the division — Tyrone and Cavan — and they were in contention right up until the final minutes of this 'must win’ fixture. Indeed, had Cavan corner back Jason McLaughlin not intervened to deny Damien Comer a match- or even campaign-defining goal, Galway would have edged in front in the 68th minute and might well have carried the day.
