Even sweeter music to come from tuam cathedral choir

LOOK along the pillars holding up the roof of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Tuam, and around the last couple of feet you will see the limestone worn dark and smooth by the coats of generations of worshippers.
But the smoothest stone of all in the Cathedral is the central pillar of the spiral stairs leading to the organ gallery and choir loft.
The 34 steps that rise from the unobtrusive door in the porch have been trodden by countless choristers in the 178 years since the mother church of the Archdiocese of Tuam was built. On the way up and down, their hands have polished the pillar to a dull sheen.
