Residents ‘devastated’ over Council’s tree felling
Works part of road upgrade
THE felling of a significant number of mature trees and cutting back of hedgerows on a rural route in Sylane has left many local residents shocked and angry.
Contractors working on behalf of Galway County Council began work last week but people in the area said they weren’t notified, and many are extremely upset at what they view has been the “destruction” of a beautiful area known locally as The Avenue.
Residents were concerned that the work was being done during nesting season — when hedge cutting isn’t usually permitted — and contacted the National Wildlife and Parks Service.
Marguerite Tierney told The Tuam Herald that they were disappointed to see the trees “butchered”.
