Oranmore dairy farm showcased to global visitors
THERE are 300 cows milked twice a day on an Oranmore farm managed by a father and son partnership.
Henry Walsh and his son Enda manage 200 hectares overall. Their main farm is in the townland of Moneymore. It’s a big operation, but not one they carry out as a sole pair.
They take on third-level students doing agricultural-related degrees each year. “We had 12 students altogether last year,” offered Henry Walsh.
When a delegation attending the annual BCAS (British Society of Animal Science) in Galway city visited the farm this month, Kate Walsh from Bushypark, Patrick Burke from Oranmore, and Michael Walsh from Ardrahan were the trio of third-level students on placements with the Walshs.
The cows are milked at 6am and 3pm on a 50-point rotary milking parlour, sourced from New Zealand.
Both Henry and Enda Walsh have spent time in the Land of the Long White Cloud and have brought what they learned from their respective experiences back with them to Oranmore.
