Vandalised pitch has ‘50-50’ chance of hosting clashes

Repair works carried out

THE pitch in Tuam Stadium was treated with liquid fertiliser on St Patrick’s Day, after tracts of it was dug up last week by a couple of young joyriders on a tractor lawnmower.

A group of volunteers, one of whom is a greenkeeper, made their way to the old ground on Monday to perform remedial works on the pitch.

Second round U20 and U17 Connacht Championship ties are down to be played in Tuam Stadium next week. Derek Savage’s U20 side are scheduled to meet Mayo next Wednesday evening (March 26), while Neil McHugh’s U17s are set to face Roscommon on Friday week (March 28).

The joyriders, who are believed to be underage, broke into Tuam Stadium on two occasions on Monday and Tuesday of last week.

They broke locks into a storage area to gain access to the tractor lawnmower and used the machine to do donuts on the pitch, leaving it almost looking like a scene from the movie Signs. The culprits also spray-painted graffiti on a wall inside the ground.

“Liquid fertiliser was put on the pitch. We’re waiting to see how it responds. It will be another couple of days before we know, but the weather has been great,” said Micheal Geraghty, Galway Football Chairman.
