Belclare to host annual North Galway Hunt Point to Point
THE stars of the future will be on show this Sunday afternoon as horse racing enthusiasts descend on Belclare for the annual North Galway Hunt Point to Point meeting.
The event will kick off at 1pm at the venue located at Eircode H54 X264, where a great day's racing is promised, alongside plenty of excitement and entertainment for all the family.
The four-year-old maiden at the course has a particularly smart roll of honour but will always be synonymous with producing the three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate, who won the race in 1999.
Topofthegame is a more recent Cheltenham Festival victor to have also recorded his first success at the popular course, winning the 2016 renewal for Donnchadh Doyle before going on to glory in RSA Chase for trainer Paul Nicholls three years later.
Romeo Coolio emerged as the winner of the four-year-old maiden race in 2023, a race which was generously sponsored by Tattersalls Ireland and Canavan’s Pub and Store in Belclare.
A son of the renowned stallion Kayf Tara, he was subsequently sold for a record £420,000 just one week later at the Cheltenham Festival. He was purchased by the esteemed trainer Gordon Elliott and is now based at his Cullentra House stables.
Since his remarkable debut, Romeo Coolio has continued to shine. His career highlights include a victory in a bumper race at Fairyhouse in January 2024, before a commendable second place finish in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival later that year.
He has also performed well in hurdles, with notable finishes in various prestigious races throughout the 2024/25 season. Looking ahead, Romeo Coolio is set to run on Tuesday at Cheltenham in the newly named Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novice Hurdle.
Music and refreshments will be available at Canavan’s Pub throughout the day, making it a perfect outing for families. Don’t miss out on what promises to be a memorable event. The first race goes to post at 1pm, with the last of six scheduled races due off at 3:30pm.
