Galway advised of five-day cold snap

Council share out of hours contact number

Met Eireann has issued a moderate weather advisory for Galway advising of very cold temperatures on Sunday night and for much of the coming week.

Severe frost and icy patches are forecast for many areas with some wintry showers. Temperatures are set to fall well below zero with nighttime temperatures of -6 forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Galway County Council is appealing to the public to exercise caution over the weekend and early next week.

The advisory is in place for Galway from 5pm on Sunday until 11pm on Thursday, with a potential risk of hazardous travelling conditions.

The Council had a briefing with the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) earlier today (Friday).

Drivers are urged to slow down, drive with caution and be aware of other road users. Pedestrians also need to be careful while walking on footpaths as they can be extremely hazardous/slippery due to ice.

People have also been advised to check on elderly, vulnerable and isolated neighbours. It is also advised to ensure that your mobile phone is fully charged.

Meanwhile, farmers have also been advised to take all precautions when dealing with livestock and possibly working alone.

Galway County Council has put an Out of Hours number in place 091-509069 and in cases of emergency people should contact 999 or 112.
