SF's Farrell tops poll in Galway West
By Patrick Flaherty
Seven candidates are in the hunt for five Dáil seats in a race to the finish in Galway West.
The magic number they are all trying to reach is the quota of 10,047, with Sinn Féin’s Mairead Farrell in the driving seat to get there first having topped the poll with 8,164 first preferences.
Following closely behind is Fianna Fáil candidate Cllr John Connolly on 7,192, while outgoing independent TDs Noel Grealish and Catherine Connolly look like retaining their seats having secured 6,887 and 6,747 first preference votes respectively.
Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton is hoping to retain her seat and won 6,011 first preferences.
However, chasing her is Independent Ireland’s Noel Thomas who is on 5,700, while Senator Sean Kyne of Fine Gael is also in contention with 5,335 votes.
There was huge disappoint for Fianna Fáil’s Gráinne Seoige who is out of the race already having only managed to pick up 2,929 votes.
All candidates will need transfers to get over the line, with Seoige’s votes potentially helping current Galway City Councillor John Connolly. Her votes could also go to some of the Connemara based candidates.
The first to be eliminated from proceedings was independent Patrick Feeney. His 52 votes are being distributed this morning.
