Massive projectors will transform Cathedral into an art canvas
Tuam songs will light up the town in a unique way
TUAM will host one of the county’s showcase events for Culture Night this evening, Friday Sept 20 when Tuam’s Cathedral will be seen in a very different way.
Lumina is the highlight of the programme from Galway County Council and will see a series of artistic outdoor projections on the Cathedral of the Assumption, teamed with vocals from Tuam’s community choir, the Tome Chanters.
This breathtaking nighttime spectacle is set to captivate audiences as the facade of the cathedral is transformed into a canvas of light and sound through projections and live performances.
One of those involved in the production is Tuam artist Jennifer Cunningham who began working on the project through a digital arts residency earlier this year.
Jennifer not only created a sequence of digital imagery, animation and video for the Lumina spectacle, she is also a member of the Tome Chanters choir.
“For me it’s just a dream come true. I’ve always wanted to have my work alongside theirs,” Jennifer told The Tuam Herald.
Jennifer’s work will be shown in tandem with a three-song repertoire by the Tome Chanters. She spent the last month working on imagery in response to the songs which will be mapped on to the cathedral courtesy of two giant projectors.
For her, having two of her passions merging for one production is fantastic. “They are such an amazing choir. Everyone is treated equally and it’s a great social outlet for me.
“I think this is going to be really special,” remarked Jennifer. “It’s really amazing for Tuam to have this spectacle for Culture Night. It will be a very unique blend of art and technology.”
Produced by Culture Works, Lumina will take place from 9.30pm as part of Culture Night Late and will also involve performances from other choirs and work by other artists in the project.
It is just one of over 40 events taking place throughout the day and late into the evening in towns such as Tuam, Athenry, Ballygar, Headford, Kilconly and Claregalway as well as in the city, Gaeltacht areas, the islands and parts of East and South Galway.
Community events cover a range of areas including music, dance, theatre, art, poetry, puppetry, storytelling, film screenings, crafting and more.
