On the roof of Donegal

History, scenery, legendary hospitality — that’s our most northern county

IF EVEREST is the Roof of the World, then Errigal is the roof of Donegal. Our northernmost county’s highest peak has been in the news lately because of the effects of unprecedented rainfall on the path towards the summit.

A rugged path it is, to be sure, but as of August 14 it looked none the worse for its inundation.

It’s quite a trek from Tuam to get so much as a glimpse of Errigal: the drive to Letterkenny, where we made our base, is the best part of three hours, give or take the delays caused by summer roadworks.

The Capital of North Donegal, as it terms itself, is a fine, bustling town, with a busy main street that does not appear to have suffered from the proliferation of business parks that have sprung up on the outskirts.
