Shear success!

Crowds throng Mountbellew

THE weather stayed fine in Mountbellew at the weekend where between 15,000 and 18,000 are believed to have attended the All-Ireland and All-Nations Sheep Shearing and Woolhandling Championships.

Male and female competitors travelled to the grounds of Mountbellew Mart for the June Bank Holiday weekend from New Zealand, Australia, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland to take part in 13 different categories, all showing their worth in how to take a fleece from a sheep.

The championships were the central piece of the Kepak-sponsored, two-day Shearfest. Aside from sheep being shorn, there was children’s entertainment, fashion and beauty shows, cookery demonstrations and other events taking place.
