RED CORTINA ON A ROLL

Athenry students sing Saw Doctors classics ‘as Gaeilge’

‘TEACH OIBRE amuigh faoin tuath, ainm álainn, nach cuimhin liom, Cóisír Nollag seachtó seacht, phreab mo chrói go láidir.’

The above lyrics of Red Cortina were translated and performed as Gaeilge in the presence of Saw Doctors’ lead guitarist Leo Moran at Coláiste an Eachréidh last Friday.

TY students from the Athenry secondary school also translated N17, I Useta Lover and Tommy K into Irish, and the four Saw Doctors hits were sung by four different students.

Seán Ó Mainnín, an Irish teacher and Deputy Principal at Coláiste an Eachréidh, coordinated the project.

“We had been working on this since Christmas, doing two classes a week. It was a big undertaking, translating the songs and putting the music in place,” said Mr Ó Mainnín.

“The first part was translating the songs from English to Irish. That took a number of weeks. There were auditions then and four students were picked to sing one of the four Saw Doctors songs each.

“We have a number of students in TY who are from Tuam. They were really interested when it was suggested we look at doing some Saw Doctors songs in Irish.”
