Six-month wait for menopause clinic

New service see high demand

THERE is a six-month waiting list for an appointment at the Complex Menopause Clinic at University Hospital Galway, which is just a year up and running.

The specialist clinic is for women with complex needs and patients must be referred by their GP. The clinic opened on November 14 last year and already has seen a significant demand for services.

It opens just once a week on Wednesdays and to date has seen over 120 new patients and 100 review cases.

The clinic’s opening followed a long campaign by public representatives who had called for such a facility for the West and the clinic takes referrals from women living throughout the Saolta hospital group area, that takes in areas from Donegal to Limerick.

Clinical Midwife Manager Helena Carr explained that while the majority of women’s menopausal concerns and symptoms can be addressed by their GP, there is a cohort who may need specialised care…
