Murray still unsure over return of experienced stars for 2023
QUESTION marks surround the futures of long-serving Galway players Sarah Dervan, Niamh Kilkenny and Heather Cooney for the 2023 season, with manager Cathal Murray ruling the trio out for the remainder of the league and potentially this year’s championship.
Combined the trio, who are now all in their 30s, have a whopping 16 All-Stars between them during their illustrious playing careers, with ex-captain Dervan and Kilkenny collecting the awards on seven occasions each and St. Thomas’ defender Cooney picking up two in 2015 and 2019. Kilkenny was also chosen as the Player of the Year in 2019 following Galway’s historic O’Duffy Cup and league double.
Speaking after last weekend’s victory over Clare, Galway senior manager Cathal Murray said talks remain “ongoing” with the players but said he was unsure if the players would return for the championship…
