Call for funding to resolve the ‘disastrous’ school bus scheme
Cllr claims parent warned garda would be called
THE school transport scheme has been branded “disastrous” by local councillors who say it’s the biggest issue to be raised with them.
Glenamaddy Cllr Peter Keaveney told a meeting of Ballinasloe MDC that in all his years as an elected members he’d never seen such annoyance among people.
“One parent was told by an inspector that if they put their child on the bus, they would get the gardai to come and take them off. The driver was told if he let the child on, the keys would be taken off him,” claimed an irate Cllr Keaveney at the meeting.
Councillors unanimously agreed to write to the Minister and those responsible for the scheme to outline their concerns and to call for additional funding to be allocated to ensure extra bus capacity was made available.
Members felt that Co Galway was one of the worst areas in the country to be impacted by a shortage of school bus places after the government introduced free school transport this year...
