Green light for Tuam’s girls’ schools to amalgamate
Mercy and Pres to take in boys in September 2023
THE long tradition of single sex secondary school education in Tuam will come to an end next September following the confirmation of approval for the proposed amalgamation of Presentation College and Scoil Bhríde into a single co-education school.
Both schools’ staff and students were informed on Monday that the Department of Education has approved the project. Scoil Bhríde, Mercy Secondary School has been identified as the most suitable site for the new secondary school, which will be delivered over two phases.
The new school will have a projected enrolment of 1,000 students and will operate from both existing school sites during the first phase, with plans to have all students located on the Mercy site by September 2024.
An interim Board of Management is due to be appointed in the coming weeks to begin the process of appointing a principal for the new school ...
