Galway’s stars show they can hold a tune at Fleadh Cheoil
24 podium finishes for Galway participants
TRADITIONAL Irish music is certainly well and truly alive in the county, underlined by the feats of Galway participants at the Comhaltas All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar last week.
Galway musicians and singers secured no less than 24 podium finishes at the 70th Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, with Rachel Treacy, Belclare (U-12 Accompaniment); Cnoc Dua Grúpa, Lackagh (U-12 Grúpaí Ceoil); Carraig Mór Grúpa Cheoil, Lackagh (Grúpaí Ceoil, 12-15); Damhnait Ní Fhátharta, Moycullen (Irish Singing, ladies, 15-18); and Belclare’s Ava Egan (U-12 Lilting) winning their respective events.
Indeed, CCÉ Lackagh were one of the big winners, as they were involved in 12 of Galway's 24 podium finishes.
Over 500,000 people thronged the streets of Mullingar over the nine days, while tens of thousands of people attended the special opening by President Michael D Higgins as the town pulsed with Irish rhythm and revelry as age-old traditions were celebrated by new generations ...
