Conflict in Claregalway over plan for full-size astro pitch
FORTY-THREE residents of Claregalway and its adjoining parishes have signed an open letter expressing their opposition to the local GAA club’s plans to replace what they describe as the “main playing pitch in Claregalway” with an artificial surface.
Early last month, signage displaying the wording “Keep our Grass pitch in Claregalway Village” was erected in a campaign to halt the construction of a full-sized AstroTurf GAA pitch at Lakeview.
A letter was then sent to The Tuam Herald from the campaigners, where they claim there is “a strong view” that both the community and the club membership would be best served by a natural, sand-based grass pitch, built with the intention of maintaining Claregalway GAA’s position at the heart of the village.
