PARISHIONERS in Tuam have been welcomed back to a new look Cathedral of the Assumption that has reopened after a prolonged restoration programme that was delayed due to the pandemic.
Mass was celebrated in the cathedral for the first time in ten months on Thursday morning, with Archbishop Michael Neary describing it as ‘a very special day for the Church’.
Archbishop Neary celebrated Thursday’s morning Mass where the chalice used was a gift from Pope Francis when he visited Knock on his trip to Ireland in 2018. Over 100 parishioners were ‘welcomed home’ by the archbishop who said they had come together to “thank God for the special day in their beautifully restored cathedral”.
