Aras Mhuire Tuam celebrates its first centenarian

TUAM native Nora Agnes (Aggie) Parsons was the first resident of Aras Mhuire Community Nursing Unit in the town to celebrate their 100th birthday there.
Aggie Conearn was one of six siblings born on Chapel Lane in Tuam and celebrated her birthday with family friends and staff in Aras Mhuire on September 12 last.
Aggie also found love in her hometown and married Bert Parsons on January 20, 1941 and the couple lived in Tubberjarlath.
The couple and their five children Joe (RIP), Phyllis (RIP), Robert, Killian and Anne (Molloy) continued with family life on the Athenry Road, Tuam.
In fact, this was Aggie’s home until March last year when she moved to Aras Mhuire Community Nursing Unit following two months in hospital.
Throughout her life, as well as rearing her family, Aggie enjoyed walking, loved listening to all types of music and attending weekly mass. She loved to bake, knit and sew and she was in the Legion of Mary.
Since moving to Aras Mhuire, Aggie enjoys regular visits from her family which now includes nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Fr Sean Flynn shared a very special message in the form of a letter which Aggie received for her birthday from President Michael D. Higgins congratulating her on “the 100th anniversary of her birth – a great life in years and rich in accomplishments”.
