BREAKING: Funding refused for Athenry Tuam Greenway

AN application by Galway County Council to develop a greenway between Athenry and Tuam has been refused.

CEO of the Council Kevin Kelly has confirmed to this afternoon’s meeting of the local authority that their funding application for the Tuam Athenry Greenway project was refused as the number of applications well exceeded available funds and the Department was prioritising applications where development was ready to commence.

The application for the Connemara Greenway received an allocation up to a maximum of €2.6 million.

Tuam area councillors Donagh Killilea and Karey McHugh expressed their disappointment at the decision while welcoming the funding for the Connemara greenway.

“This isn’t the first hurdle we’ve come across and it won’t be the last. It won’t deter our goal,” remarked Cllr McHugh at this afternoon’s meeting.
