Dunmore claims World Cup star
LONG known as a nursery of Gaelic football talent, Dunmore can now claim credit for a World Cup soccer star.
Rose Lavelle, star of the recently crowned World Cup winning US soccer team has a strong link with the north Galway town, through her grandfather Jim Donnellon whose family came from Dunmore.
With five families in the region directly related to the talented young midfielder who scored a stunning goal in the World Cup final against the Netherlands earlier this month, the town is bursting with pride at their newest sporting hero.
Carmel Howley (née Donlon) is part of a large clan of Donlons around the world who are connected through a WhatsApp group.
