Claregalway college fall short
COLÁISTE Bhaile Chláir's quest for back-to-back Lidl All-Ireland Post Primary Senior B Football Championships came unstuck in Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, as Orlagh Gavin inspired St Patrick's Academy to victory.
It was a poignant afternoon for all connected with the Dungannon school after three teenagers from the area died tragically at the Greenvale Hotel in Cookstown on St Patrick's night. Two of the victims, Connor Currie (16) and Morgan Barnard (17), were students at the school, while Lauren Bullock (17) attended St Patrick’s College, also in Dungannon.
An emotional minute's silence was also impeccably observed before throw-in in their memory and it was clear to see how much this victory meant at the final whistle.
Second half goals from Gavin and Alanah Donnelly were the game's decisive scores, though Claregalway College battled valiantly to the bitter end with Eimear Mitchell and Shauna Brennan shooting a combined 1-7 between them.
