Milltown and Salthill must meet again
GUBU, the expression coined in the early 1980s in relation to then Taoiseach Charles Haughey, is as apt as any when trying to make sense of Milltown’s latest clash with Salthill-Knocknacarra.
Grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented: it ticked all those boxes at times. When the dust finally settled and the couple of thousand patrons packed into Tuam Stadium drew their breath and started to process events in the third of the weekend’s Senior Football Championship quarter-finals, a draw was probably the fairest of the three available outcomes.
Both sides will still have their regrets at not getting over the line. Neither did quite enough to win on a horrible afternoon for football and the net result is that they’ll do it all over again next Sunday afternoon, this time at Pearse Stadium, to decide Mountbellew-Moylough’s opponents in the final four.
