Williamstown thrives through community initiative

THERE has been plenty of negative press surrounding rural Ireland of late.
Post office closures, the scrapping of Garda stations, the removal of bus stops and other such steps would make you think there is little happening outside of the larger towns in our countryside.
But if there was ever a shining example of a rural community flourishing under the initiative of its local population it is to be found in Williamstown in North East Galway.
In Williamstown, a village of about 100 people, there are several groups working for the good of the area and community, among them the local Heritage Society, Tidy Towns and Development Company.
Leo Finnegan, Chairman of the Heritage Society, says community spirit has always been strong in the locality.
