From the bars of New York to a family pub in Tuam
THE Galway footballers’ homecoming after winning the All-Ireland in 1998 is a night that holds many memories and it proved to be a particularly historic night for one of Tuam’s longest-running family pubs.
The late Junie Loftus, always smartly dressed in a shirt, tie and red waist-coast, worked his last night in his pub for the heroes’ homecoming which has gone into the family history books as the night he took in more in the till than he paid for the pub!
Fifty years ago, on September 6, 1968 JP Loftus’s pub opened its doors on Shop Street and apart from the faces behind and in front of the counter – very little has changed there since.
