Corless rejects invite to reception for Pope
LOCAL historian Catherine Corless has rejected an invitation to a civic reception taking place this weekend in Dublin Castle to mark the visit of Pope Francis.
Ms Corless received a letter directly from the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s office yesterday morning (Tuesday) inviting her to hear an address by the Pope this weekend as part of the World Meeting of Families.
The invitation read: “On the occasion of the visit of Pope Francis for the World Meeting of Families, the Taoiseach Mr Leo Varadkar TD invites Ms Catherine Corless to an address by his Holiness in St Patrick’s Hall Dublin Castle on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at 12.15pm.”
Speaking to The Tuam Herald, Ms Corless says she has refused to attend the event in order to stand in solidarity with the victims and survivors of the Mother and Baby Home, who are still waiting for justice four years after news first broke of their plight.
