Funeral drama raised funds for Pieta House
ONE drama performed in three pubs over three nights raised €1,360 for Pieta House, the suicide prevention charity.
Prodigal, written by Andrew Carney and performed by him and Tom Carney (no relation), was set in a pub after a funeral, and so the staging was realistic, to say the least.
The characters are a father and son, bereaved by the death of their son and brother, and the story of a broken family is teased out in 50 minutes of conversation.
The attention of the three audiences was held throughout, not as easy a task as on a conventional stage when in the relaxed atmosphere of the Rustic Vaults in Tuam, Sheridan’s in Milltown and Walsh’s in Dunmore.
The themes of suicide, family conflicts and jealousies and a father’s drinking problem are all highly relevant to society today, and to the problems faced by clients of Pieta House.
