Plea to help save Tuam’s old ball alley
PLANS to transform an old ball alley in Tuam into classrooms have been met with dismay by a group who say they use the facility on a regular basis.
St Jarlath’s College was recently granted planning permission to transform the alley at the back of the secondary school into a new home for construction studies students. The school’s previous proposal to demolish the structure was turned down by Galway Co Council as planners felt it had cultural value and knocking it would have a serious detrimental impact on the setting of the protected structure [college].
But the plans have come as a surprise to a group of between 20 to 40 people of all ages in the town who insist the alley is used most days during the summer and often throughout the year.
