Shock at death of woman in farm accident
The Headford community is in shock following the death of a local woman in what is believed to have been a farm accident yesterday (Monday).
The alarm was raised on the farm at Curracuggeen, outside Headford, coming up to lunchtime on Monday when the body of a woman was discovered in a field.
Gardaí and the local doctor were called to the scene of the incident which occurred sometime between 6am and 12.45pm.
The woman, aged 54, was tending to her cattle and was apparently fatally injured by the animals. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to University College Hospital Galway where a post mortem was due to be carried out.
The woman has not yet been named publicly but local Councillor Mary Hoade extended her sympathy to the woman’s siblings and uncle, all members of a well-known family in the locality.
“We are all shocked and saddened and I extend my sympathy to her family, whom I know very well. Our thoughts and prayers are with them,” she said.
Gardaí in Headford are investigating the incident in liaison with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) who probe all farm and workplace accidents.
“Livestock were present in the field at the time so we are working under the assumption that she was attacked by the livestock. We have begun an investigation,” said a spokesman for the HSA.
