All-Ireland won with two points deep in added time

RED CARDS, a last minute goal, incredible saves, injury-time points and more twists and turns than a Hollywood blockbuster: Saturday’s All-Ireland Post Primary Senior D Football Championship final between St Cuan’s, Castleblakeney and Letterkenny’s Coláiste Ailigh had just about everything.

Drawing from the Caltra, Pádraig Pearses, Menlough and St Gabriel’s clubs, Cuan’s showed their mettle in the most high-octane finale imaginable in Connolly Park in Collooney, home to the Owenmore Gaels GAA Club, to claim a first-ever All-Ireland in Gaelic football.
National titles had been won previously in hurling, camogie and ladies football, but never before by the school’s boys in the big ball code.
Last weekend changed all that and after a game that’ll be recalled fondly by those fortunate to witness it, Evan Naughton accepted the Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice Cup and hit on all the right notes in an impressive acceptance speech.
It was a rollercoaster ride for St Cuan’s players, management and supporters alike.
